Tarangire Retreat - Tanzania Adventure Safaris

🐘 6 Days Tarangire Safari – Deep adventure Immersion.

6 Nights | Extended Tarangire → Karatu → Ngorongoro

Best for: Wildlife enthusiasts and repeat safari-goers who want to truly know Tarangire rather than pass through it, combined with a luxurious Ngorongoro experience.

Days 1–2 — Arrival & Two Full Days in Tarangire

Fly into Kilimanjaro and transfer directly into Tarangire National Park. Spend your first evening settling in and doing a sunset game drive. The next two days are dedicated entirely to deep exploration of the park’s different zones — from the elephant-crowded riverbanks of the north to the remote, rarely-visited southern circuit around Lake Burunge and the Mkungunero Game Controlled Area.

The park’s southern zones are dramatically under-visited compared to the north. Here you encounter lion prides lazing in the mid-morning sun, massive packs of African wild dog (one of Tanzania’s most significant wild dog populations roams Tarangire), cheetah on the open plains, and the magnificent lesser kudu lurking in the thickets. Night game drives (where permitted on the conservancy adjacent to the park) reveal porcupine, genet, aardvark, and scrub hares in the spotlight.

Lodge: Tarangire Simba Lodge Tarangire Simba Lodge sits right inside the park near the southern Sangaiwe Gate, making it ideal for those seeking a deeper, quieter safari without the morning rush of vehicles at the north gate. The lodge features spacious stone-and-canvas suites on raised wooden platforms, each with a private veranda overlooking a waterhole where elephants are regularly seen drinking — sometimes from the swimming pool itself. Game drives start early and return late, maximising time on the track. The lodge is family-run and has an intimate, personal atmosphere.

Day 3 — Tarangire to Karatu (Ngorongoro Highlands)

Depart Tarangire and head north through the Maasai steppe toward the cool coffee highlands of Karatu, the agricultural village nestled between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. En route, stop at a roadside Maasai village for a cultural engagement — elders explain traditional beekeeping, cattle herding, and age-set customs.

Arrive at your lodge in the Ngorongoro highlands in time for lunch and a lazy afternoon. The highlands climate is a welcome contrast to the heat of the plains — crisp, green, and fragrant with eucalyptus and coffee blossom. In the late afternoon, walk through the lodge’s gardens or take a guided hike to a viewpoint overlooking the rift.

Lodge: Ngorongoro Oldeani Mountain Lodge Tucked into the forested slopes of Mt. Oldeani, this lodge combines colonial architecture with East African craftsmanship to stunning effect. Rooms feature clawfoot bathtubs, both indoor and outdoor showers, handwoven textiles, and private verandas overlooking the forested mountain. The dining hall — dramatic, high-ceilinged, decorated with African art — serves buffet dinners anchored by a BBQ station with flame-grilled meats. The swimming pool deck at sunset, looking over the Ngorongoro Highlands, is simply stunning.

Days 4–5 — Two Nights at Ngorongoro, Full Day in the Crater

On Day 4, transfer to the Ngorongoro crater rim. Check in to your lodge and spend the afternoon acclimating to the altitude and taking in the staggering views of the caldera. In the evening, take a guided walking tour along the crater rim with a Maasai ranger — a rare opportunity to understand this landscape from a human and ecological perspective simultaneously.

Day 5 is the full crater-floor descent. All the iconic Ngorongoro wildlife awaits — rhino, lion, hyena, wildebeest, zebra, flamingos — within a contained natural theatre that makes game viewing exceptionally productive. Your guide knows the crater intimately and will take you off the well-worn tracks to quieter corners.

Lodge: Neptune Ngorongoro Luxury Lodge Set on the crater rim with its own dramatic vistas, Neptune Ngorongoro is an all-inclusive lodge celebrated for impeccable service — guests consistently note that staff members like Norbert and Veronica treat you less like guests and more like beloved family. The rooms are among the largest on the crater rim, featuring sitting rooms, giant bathrooms, and balconies where elephants are sometimes seen grazing at dusk. Dinners here are a social occasion — the head chef regularly emerges to check on diners personally, and traditional dance performances by Maasai staff follow most evening meals. The property’s infinity pool, suspended above the crater, may be the finest sundowner spot in Tanzania.

Day 6 — Final Morning in the Highlands, Transfer to Arusha

A relaxed final morning at the lodge — perhaps a spa treatment or a final walk along the crater rim — before the 3-hour drive back to Kilimanjaro Airport.

Estimated Duration: 6 nights / 7 days Highlights: Deep Tarangire exploration, wild dog sightings, cultural Maasai experiences, highland walks, two nights on the Ngorongoro rim
