Tarangire Retreat - Tanzania Adventure Safaris

8 Nights | Arusha → Tarangire → Lake Manyara → Ngorongoro → Arusha

Best for: Travellers with more time who want the complete luxury northern Tanzania experience — the full circuit with extended stays in each area and a variety of activities beyond game drives.

Day 1 — Arrival in Arusha

Fly into Kilimanjaro and transfer to Arusha for a one-night stay at a colonial-era property in the foothills of Mount Meru. Use the day to recover from travel, visit the vibrant Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre, and enjoy a welcome dinner. Your safari guide will visit in the evening for a detailed briefing.

Days 2–4 — Three Nights in Tarangire National Park

Three full days gives you the luxury of pace in Tarangire. Day one: arrive in the early afternoon for a game drive along the Tarangire River, where the elephant concentration is at its most dramatic. Day two: a full south-circuit exploration, leaving at 6am with a packed bush breakfast to eat beside a waterhole. Day three: a walking safari with a TANAPA-licensed guide — on foot in the African bush, the landscape transforms. Termite mounds become cathedrals, dik-diks appear at your feet, and your guide explains the medicinal uses of plants that elephants and Maasai both depend on.

Lodge: andBeyond Tarangire Treetops (Elewana Collection) Returning guests describe this treehouse lodge as the most magical place they have ever stayed. The 20 treetop suites are literal works of art — giant baobabs grow through the verandas and rooms, and the sensation of sleeping in the canopy with only canvas between you and the sounds of the African night is transformative. The Elewana Collection is renowned across East Africa for exceptional guiding and personalised service. The lodge’s private conservancy allows night drives and walking safaris not available in the main park.

Days 5–6 — Two Nights at Lake Manyara

Transfer north to Lake Manyara, spending two nights to truly explore this underrated park. The first afternoon: game drive through the groundwater forest and along the alkaline lake shore, looking for the famous tree-climbing lions. The second day: a full-day canoe safari on Lake Manyara itself — paddling silently through flocks of flamingos, pelicans, and storks while hippos surface nearby. This is one of the most unusual and memorable wildlife experiences in Tanzania.

Lodge: andBeyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge This is among the most acclaimed lodges in East Africa. Set deep inside Lake Manyara National Park — a 3-hour game drive from the gate — the lodge is only accessible by traversing the park itself, making every arrival an adventure. The 10 elevated treehouse suites are surrounded by a mahogany and wild fig forest, with open-air showers and outdoor baths beneath the forest canopy. &Beyond’s signature guiding philosophy — Earth, People, Wildlife — means that every activity is deeply immersive and educational. The dining — served in rotating locations including a forest clearing lit by lanterns — is exceptional. Staff greet each arriving guest with traditional song.

Days 7–9 — Three Nights at Ngorongoro

Three nights on the Ngorongoro rim gives you the rare luxury of visiting the crater on two separate days — the wildlife experience is completely different depending on time of year, weather, and which part of the caldera you focus on. On the day between crater descents, spend the morning on a guided cultural walk with Maasai herders and an afternoon visit to Olduvai Gorge (Oldupai), the “Cradle of Mankind” where Louis and Mary Leakey excavated some of the oldest hominid fossils ever discovered — a profound addition to any safari.

Lodge: Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge The Serena Ngorongoro is architecturally integrated into the crater rim itself, built from local stone to resemble ancient rock paintings and archaeological sites. The 75 rooms are spacious and well-appointed, each with a private balcony overlooking the crater — one of the finest views on earth. The lodge is especially celebrated for its food (an outstanding buffet with both international and traditional Tanzanian options), its nightly Maasai dance performances, and the warmth of its guides who know every corner of the crater floor. The communal fireplace and lounge become a natural gathering point each evening.

Day 9 — Return to Arusha / Departure

A final morning game drive in the conservation area before the scenic drive back to Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Estimated Duration: 8 nights / 9 days Highlights: Walking safari, canoe safari on Lake Manyara, two crater descents, Olduvai Gorge, full northern circuit with deep immersion at each destination
