Chimpanzee Tracking and Forest Walks in Nyungwe National Park

In the southwest of Rwanda, Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse montane rainforests, covering an area of over 1,000 square kilometres. Nyungwe is the premier destination in Rwanda for chimpanzee tracking, with habituated chimpanzee communities that can be tracked on foot through the dense forest interior. The forest is also home to 13 other primate species, including Angola colobus monkeys — often seen in spectacular troops of hundreds swinging through the high canopy.

For those who love walking in wild places, Nyungwe’s network of forest trails offers some of the finest hiking in East Africa, including the famous canopy walkway that stretches high above the forest floor, offering extraordinary views over the treetops and distant hills. Birding in Nyungwe is world-class, with over 310 recorded species including numerous Albertine Rift endemics.

Like Akagera, accessing Nyungwe requires a 4×4 vehicle — particularly if you are travelling during the rainy season, when mountain roads can be challenging. The most important step is securing your gorilla trekking permit well in advance, either through an authorised tour operator or directly through the Rwanda Development Board. On the day of your trek, you simply need to arrive at the park headquarters in Kinigi by 7:00 AM for the pre-trek briefing. All treks are led by experienced park rangers and trackers — this is non-negotiable, as the safety of both visitors and gorillas depends on trained guidance. Most other activities within the park, including golden monkey tracking and volcano hikes, are similarly pre-booked and ranger-guided. Outside of these organised activities, however, driving around the surrounding Virunga landscape at your own pace is a genuinely enjoyable experience.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

The park offers several excellent accommodation options ranging from luxury lodges to budget campsites. The Mutumba Hills Campsite, set in the northern sector of the park, is particularly popular among self-drive campers, offering comprehensive facilities and elevated views across the park — with wildlife often visible from the campsite itself.

It is worth noting that a 4×4 vehicle is highly recommended for exploring Akagera’s network of dirt tracks, especially during the rainy seasons when roads can become muddy and waterlogged. Self-drive game drives within the park are permitted and well-organised, with clear maps and marked circuits.
